The Beach House South Milton

Overview

The Beach House South Milton: amazing food with an unforgettable view

The Beach House is perched on the water’s edge at South Milton in Devon (UK). Just a 10 minute drive from the bustling harbour town of Salcombe. The Beach House is a laidback, beach shack style restaurant on a stunning stretch of Devon coast and opens all day throughout the summer. Seating is limited indoors, however there are plenty of tables outside to soak up the sun. Book well in advance, grab a takeaway or wait for a table to enjoy locally caught seafood in dishes like the fritto miso or seafood platter.

On a summer’s day, it’s clear that the Beach House is a very popular sea-side location with its panoramic views. This is also the perfect location for beach walks on a wild blustery day and barista coffees.

We decided during the heatwave to walk from Hope Cove along the cliff path to South Milton Sands and stop for lunch. We had booked a table for 12pm so had half an hour to take in the view and watch the kite surfers.

Food & Drink

I ordered the sizzling prawns which comes as either a starter or main and accompanied it with the chips, which tasted as good as triple cooked chips. The shell-of prawns were beautifully cooked in a garlicky butter which had a lovely flavour and hint of chilli which added the necessary heat. The highlight of the menu for one of our friends was the seafood sharing platter; whole crab, prawns, mussels and clams, accompanied with chips and salad. The rest of us were in awe of this. Small boxes of Trivial Pursuit cards are on each table.

The young staff are keen and friendly. A mix of seasoned waiters and less experienced part-time helpers. Which you kind of expect in a restaurant like this.

An enjoyable lunch, with simple yet well-presented dishes and are a perfect fit with this beach-front restaurant. Having lunch in the sun outside, while looking out over the beach and water is just very appealing. I’m besotted with this place and I’m not alone. The Beach House may not be particularly cheap, but it takes simple ingredients and cooks it well, I wouldn’t expect to pay anything less given the secluded nature and fresh seafood.
